May is the time to plant tomatoes in your garden. The most popular kind of tomato we sell at the Farm at Green Village is the Heirloom. The Heirloom tomato is an open-pollinated tomato whose seeds have been around since before 1940 and have existed in circulation for over 50 years. We carry a wide variety of Heirlooms – the Mortgage Lifter, Brandywine and the Pineapple. We recommend rotating the position of your tomato plants each year. When planning your vegetable garden, please remember to find a new sunny spot for your heirlooms and mix the existing soil with good organic matter – we recommend Bumper Crop. Do not overwater young plants, allow them to develop a deep and extensive root system by letting them dry slightly in between waterings. Give your tomato plants a good soaking on the day of planting, then every couple of days for the first two weeks. After 2-4 trusses of flowers have set, then begin watering more often. Fertilizing your soil to feed your plants will help bear fruit. You may need to cage your tomato plants once they begin bearing fruit to avoid the stems breaking. Following these steps should provide you with a plentiful bounty of tomatoes this summer!
